International Air Freight Shipping: The Truck Connection
When air is the right international mode, and how a licensed truck broker covers the pickup and delivery that airlines will not.
Updated 2026-08-20 · international air freight shipping
International air freight shipping exists because some cargo cannot wait for a vessel or a seven-day highway run. Samples, replacement parts, high-value electronics, and seasonal product that missed the ocean cut-off all show up on air waybills.
COL Freight Solutions does not fly planes and does not issue master air waybills. We are a property broker that arranges the trucks that collect from your dock and deliver to the air cargo terminal—or recover the freight after it lands and take it to the consignee. That distinction matters when a website promises “air freight” and then cannot produce an IATA number.
When air is justified
Air earns its keep when the cost of a line-down plant, a missed retail window, or a perishable clock exceeds the premium. It is a poor default for dense, low-value freight that can ride a dry van.
Shippers who treat every international emergency as “call the airline” often discover the bottleneck is a missed cutoff at the cargo terminal, not the flight itself.
Airport-adjacent trucking is still freight
Most U.S. and Mexican air shipments still require a screened trucker, a TSA-aware facility, or at least a carrier who can make a tight airport appointment. The airline will not send a 26-foot box truck to your industrial park.
COL books that highway segment: local cartage, regional LTL, or a dedicated straight truck when the piece count will not survive a breakbulk dock.
- Pickup to origin gateway (Miami, LAX, DFW, MEX, and similar).
- Recovery from destination gateway to warehouse or store.
- Expedited road as a cheaper substitute when air is not actually required.
Who holds the air contract
A freight forwarder or an airline cargo office holds the air waybill. They rate chargeable weight, fuel, security, and destination handling. COL does not pretend to replace that contract.
What we will do is keep the truck appointment honest so the freight is at the cutoff the forwarder quoted you. Missed cutoffs are how “next flight out” becomes “tomorrow’s flight plus storage.”
Dimensional weight and the truck that follows
Air prices cubes. If your carton is light but bulky, the air invoice will hurt. The follow-on truck may still be a simple LTL class problem. Do not assume the two invoices use the same math.
Give both parties the same dimensions. Conflicting cube is a classic dispute between the air agent and the inland carrier.
How to brief COL on an air-connected move
Send gateway airport, pieces, weight, dimensions, ready time, and whether the cargo is already on an air waybill. If a forwarder is in the file, copy them. Offices in Saint Petersburg, FL and Los Gatos, CA can coordinate East and West Coast gateways. Phone 561-880-9808.
