Intermodal Transportation: Rail Linehaul With Truck First and Last Mile
Intermodal transportation puts a container or trailer on rail for the long haul, then trucks the ramps. Cheaper on some long lanes, longer on the calendar.

Intermodal transportation is the disciplined split of a move: truck to a ramp, rail for the long, heavy segment, truck again to the door. The box may be a 53-foot domestic container or an ISO ocean box that never sees a ship on this particular hop.
COL Freight Solutions quotes intermodal when the lane, the calendar, and the cargo accept ramp dwell. We will not sell it as a faster FTL. If you need a sealed highway van with one driver relationship, say FTL and skip the ramp.
How intermodal transportation is built
COFC (container on flatcar) and related rail products need a ramp pair that actually has service. Not every city is a ramp city. The first-mile and last-mile trucks are still truck freight, with chassis or a 53' domestic box depending on the product.
Cutoffs at the ramp are as real as LTL terminal cutoffs. Miss them and the box sits. That sit is why intermodal transit is a window.
When the economics work
Long, dense lanes with balanced freight—think coast-to-coast cubes that can wait an extra stretch of calendar—are the classic case. Fuel and driver capacity on highway can make rail the quieter P&L.
Short hauls and appointment-critical freight usually stay on truck. A ramp plus two drays can erase the rail savings if the distance is modest.
Equipment and cargo that belong—or do not
Dry, stackable, damage-tolerant freight likes intermodal. High-value electronics without a security plan, uncrated machinery, and tight temperature cargo need a harder look. Reefer intermodal exists as a specialized product, not as a default.
Overweight and over-dimensional loads are often a highway-permit problem, not a ramp problem. Do not force them onto a product that cannot take the envelope.
Mexico and Canada are not a U.S. ramp map
Cross-border intermodal adds rail partners, crossings, and customs. A U.S. domestic container product does not automatically become a Mexico door delivery. COL will spell the legs.
If the cargo is already an ocean box, the inland intermodal move is a continuation, not a new religion. Still quote the ramp and the door.
Ask COL if the ramp pair is even real
