Freight Shipping to Hawaii: Mainland Truck Plus Ocean
Hawaii freight is a two-mode problem. COL covers the U.S. mainland truck; ocean barge space belongs to the water carrier or your forwarder.
Updated 2026-08-20 · freight shipping to Hawaii
Freight shipping to Hawaii is not a longer version of a California delivery. The islands sit beyond the contiguous highway network. Almost every pallet still begins as a truck pickup on the mainland, then transfers to a Jones Act ocean carrier or barge service that COL does not operate.
Shippers get into trouble when they ask one party for a “Hawaii rate” and receive a number that ignores westbound port cutoff, neighbor-island handling, or the fact that Honolulu delivery is a different product from a Hilo or Kahului delivery. We stay honest about which slice we book.
The mainland truck is the part we arrange
Factories in the Southeast, Midwest, and Mexico still need a dry van, flatbed, or LTL pickup that hits Los Angeles, Oakland, Seattle, or another load port the water carrier named. That is standard property-broker work.
COL Freight Solutions (USDOT 4427559, MC-1741651) books those inland moves. We will not invent a through-island tariff or pretend we sail the vessel.
Ocean to Hawaii is a specialized market
U.S. domestic ocean to Hawaii is typically booked with established Jones Act carriers or through a freight forwarder who already holds that contract. Cutoffs are real. Neighbor islands add barge connections after Honolulu.
If you already have a steamship booking, send us the port, cutoff, and whether the freight must arrive containerized or as domestic trailer cargo for transload. We will cover the highway to that gate.
What to measure before anyone quotes
Cube and weight decide whether you waste a container or crush an LTL class. Hawaii lanes punish fluffy freight. Hazardous, temperature control, and overlength pieces change the water product entirely.
Delivery on Oahu versus a neighbor island should be in the first email, not the fourth. So should whether the consignee has a dock.
- Mainland origin hours and whether a live load is required.
- Named load port and sailing cutoff from your ocean partner.
- Final island, city, and dock-versus-liftgate at destination.
Mexico and Canada origins still hit a U.S. port
A Mexican plant shipping to Honolulu still crosses into the United States before the ocean leg. That inland crossing is COL territory. The ocean booking remains with the party licensed and contracted to move it over water.
Warehousing near the load port is often smarter than missing a sailing. We can arrange storage when the factory finished early or the vessel slipped.
Talk to the West Coast desk with the ocean file attached
Los Gatos, California sits closer to typical Hawaii load ports; Saint Petersburg, Florida covers East origin pickups that still have to reach the West Coast. Call 561-880-9808 with both the inland and the ocean reference so we are not guessing the cutoff.
