Air Freight When Ground Transit Cannot Meet the Window

Air freight is airport cutoffs and chargeable weight, not a parcel counter. Use it when a plant-down part or launch date cannot wait for a truck.

Air freight is the mode you buy when the calendar is the constraint and the cargo can fly: spare parts, samples, high-value electronics, and launches that miss a highway window. You pay for chargeable weight—the greater of actual kilos and dimensional weight—plus airport handling and the truck that still has to recover the freight.

COL Freight Solutions is a licensed property broker first; we coordinate air when the load needs it rather than pretending every pallet belongs on a 737. Ask for a multimodal quote that compares a realistic truck window against air so you are not flying freight that would have made it by van.

When air freight is the rational spend

A line-down part, a missed ocean sailing, or a retail on-shelf date that FTL cannot hit are the usual reasons. So is cargo that is light enough that dim weight still beats the cost of a dedicated team driver.

Do not use air as a habit for heavy, low-value freight. Steel and bagged commodities almost always belong on surface unless a contract penalty dwarfs the air bill.

Airport to door is still two products

Airport-to-airport is the airline piece. Door-to-door adds pickup, screening, recovery, and last-mile truck. Quotes that hide the truck legs are how “cheap air” becomes an expensive surprise in Chicago or Guadalajara.

Cutoffs are real. Cargo that misses the build may roll to the next flight. COL will not invent a same-night miracle if the screening window is closed.

What the airline cares about

UN numbers, lithium batteries, magnets, and perfume-level alcohol change the product. So do sagging pallets that will not go on a ULD. Build air freight to fly, not to survive only a dry van.

Dimensional weight uses a divisor. Measure the finished handling unit, not the product inside the wrap. Loose length is how a “small crate” bills like furniture.

Air versus expedited truck

Inside the U.S., a team FTL or expedite van can beat air door-to-door on some mid-distance lanes once you add airport dwell. Ask COL to price both. The faster-looking mode is not always the faster arrival.

For Mexico, air can skip a border queue and still need a licensed customs process at the airport. The truck did not disappear; it shortened.

Questions shippers ask

Does COL operate aircraft?

No. COL coordinates air freight through airline and forwarder partners while remaining a licensed U.S. property broker for the highway pieces. The quote will name the roles.

How is air freight priced?

Chargeable weight, service level (deferred versus priority), origin/destination airports, and extras such as screening or dangerous goods. There is no public kilo card that fits every lane. Quote the shipment.

Can I air a pallet that usually goes LTL?

Sometimes, if it is built for air and the date requires it. Many LTL pallets are over-dimensioned for cheap air. Photos and dims decide.

Is air safer than truck for theft?

Airports have controls, but recovery lots and last-mile trucks still exist. High-value freight needs declared coverage and discreet packaging either way.
