How to Choose a Freight Shipping Company That Is Licensed
The right freight shipping company is licensed, reachable, and honest about broker versus carrier. Here is the checklist COL expects you to run—including on COL.
Updated 2026-08-20 · freight shipping company
A freight shipping company is either a motor carrier with trucks, a property broker that books those trucks, or a hybrid that blurs the two. If you cannot tell which one you hired, you will find out on the first claim.
COL Freight Solutions LLC is a licensed U.S. property broker: USDOT 4427559, MC-1741651. We quote FTL, LTL, warehousing, and cross-border capacity, then stay on the load. Use this checklist on us and on anyone else in your inbox.
What a freight shipping company must show on paper
Ask for USDOT and MC numbers and look them up. A broker authority is not the same as a carrier authority. Insurance certificates should name cargo and auto liability with limits that match your product, not a PDF from 2019.
If the company will not put a human on the phone after you tender, it is a portal, not a partner. COL answers at 561-880-9808 from Saint Petersburg and Los Gatos desks.
Broker, carrier, or forwarder
Carriers run tractors. Brokers arrange transportation and are paid a margin for coverage and exception handling. Freight forwarders more often appear on air and ocean house bills. COL’s core is property brokerage for highway freight, with multimodal coordination when the cargo needs it.
Do not let a sales deck say “our fleet” if the legal entity is broker-only. Transparency is cheaper than a surprise on who is actually hauling.
Service fit beyond the authority number
Licensing gets you in the door. Fit is equipment (dry van, reefer, flatbed), bilingual border support, and whether they will say no to a load they cannot cover. A company that quotes every mode in ten seconds is guessing.
COL will ask stackability, dock type, and border paperwork status before numbering FTL versus LTL. That friction is the work.
Loyalty versus the cheapest Saturday rate
Spot-market shopping trains your inbox and trains carriers not to protect your Friday pickup. A company that wants recurring volume should explain how exceptions are handled, not only how cheap the first mile looks.
COL’s Transportation Cost Recovery Program™ is for qualifying long-term shippers, not a coupon on a one-off. Ask about it after the lane and cadence are real.
Put COL through the same test, then quote
Send a live load: ZIPs, pallets, commodity, ready time. A freight shipping company that cannot return a coherent quote with assumptions listed is not ready for your dock.
Request that quote from COL and keep the written assumptions. That file is what you audit when the invoice arrives.
