Northbound truckload and LTL into Canada: border reality, equipment, and who actually books the highway capacity.

Freight shipping to Canada is a highway product for most finished goods, not an ocean mystery. The friction is the border: hours of service stacked against crossing windows, facility rules that change at the first Canadian dock, and paperwork that is “simple” only when PARS or ACI is already in motion.

COL Freight Solutions arranges USA–Canada and Mexico–Canada truckload and LTL as a licensed property broker. We do not clear customs. We do put a bilingual operations desk on the file so the Mexican plant, the U.S. warehouse, and the Canadian receiver are not playing telephone in three time zones.

What actually moves north

Automotive parts, food (when temperature control is honest), building materials, and retail replenishment dominate the lanes we see. Dense freight prefers FTL. Mixed POs into Ontario or Quebec distribution often belong on LTL—if the Canadian terminal network and appointment culture are understood up front.

Alaska-bound freight that transits Canada is a different product. Do not mix that file with a Toronto grocery delivery.

Border is a process, not a line on a map

The motor carrier still needs a legal driver, the right FAST or commercial crossing plan, and a consignee who will not refuse a 53-foot trailer at a downtown Montreal door. Your customs broker still needs the invoice and the lead time they asked for.

COL’s role is capacity and communication. If ACE/ACI or Mexican pedimento work is incomplete, the truck sitting at the plaza is not a “broker failure” in the FMCSA sense. It is a filing failure. We will say so early rather than babysit a live load that cannot legally proceed.

Equipment that survives Canadian winters and urban docks

Dry van remains the workhorse. Reefer is non-negotiable for the commodities that require it; we will not “try a van with a blanket.” Flatbed needs tarps and winter securement that match the route, not a Florida afternoon.

Liftgate and inside delivery show up more often at Canadian retail and foodservice doors than shippers expect. Flag them before the quote, not at the dock.

From Mexico, Canada is two borders

A Guadalajara origin heading to Mississauga is still two customs territories and two highway regimes. Through-service is possible with the right carrier partners. It is not a single magical trailer that ignores both agencies.

Consistent northbound shippers can ask whether their volume fits the Transportation Cost Recovery Program™. Qualification is reviewed; it is not a coupon code.

How to request a Canada quote that we can cover

Origin hours, destination hours, commodity, weight, stack height, and whether the receiver is a grocery DC, a bonded warehouse, or a residential-adjacent store. Call 561-880-9808 or email the same detail you would put on a tender. Saint Petersburg and Los Gatos desks share the file so East and West origins are not an afterthought.

Questions shippers ask

Do you operate trucks in Canada?

COL arranges transportation with licensed motor carriers. We are a U.S. property broker, not a Canadian trucking company that owns the tractors.

Can you ship from Mexico to Canada in one movement?

We arrange cross-border FTL and LTL across the three countries when the commodity, documents, and equipment fit. Expect two border events, not one.

Who files Canadian customs?

Your licensed customs broker. COL does not replace that license. We coordinate pickup so the filing has a real ETA instead of a guess.

Is LTL available into Canada?

Yes, when the terminal network and accessorials are accepted. Some Canadian destinations price more like a dedicated truck once liftgate, residential, or appointment fees stack. We will show that comparison rather than hide it.
