Freight shipping cost is not a single published tariff you can look up and trust. It is a stack: linehaul for the miles and equipment, a fuel surcharge that moves with diesel, a classification or density factor on LTL, and extras for how the dock actually works on pickup and delivery day.

The four levers inside freight shipping cost
Mode is the first fork. Full truckload (FTL) buys the trailer; you pay for exclusive use whether the box is full or not. Less-than-truckload (LTL) shares space, so carriers price by a combination of weight, freight class, and the linear feet or cube you occupy.
Distance still matters, but it is not linear. A 90-mile local haul can cost more per mile than a 1,200-mile lane because of driver hours, empty repositioning, and urban congestion. Border lanes add dwell, handoffs, and documentation time that never appear in a simple mileage calculator.
Why LTL class and density swing the invoice
On LTL, two pallets with the same weight can price in different bands if one is dense steel fittings and the other is bulky foam. National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) class, often density-driven, tells the carrier how much trailer cube you consume relative to pounds.
If the class on the bill of lading does not match what the terminal measures, you get a reclass or reweigh. That correction is frequently larger than the original linehaul gap between two brokers. Measuring pallet length, width, height, and actual scale weight before you request rates is the cheapest insurance you can buy.
Accessorials that sit outside the linehaul
Liftgate, inside delivery, residential, limited-access sites, appointments, detention after free time, and layover are billed because they consume driver hours the linehaul never covered. A “cheap” rate that assumes a forklift dock will explode if the site is a storefront with a liftgate.
- Name the pickup and delivery facility type (dock, liftgate, limited access).
- State appointment windows and any lumper or warehouse rules.
- Flag hazardous, temperature, or over-length pieces before the truck is assigned.
Fuel, capacity, and the quote you can act on
Fuel surcharge is usually a percentage of linehaul or a per-mile add-on tied to a diesel index. Capacity tightness—produce season, year-end retail, weather—moves FTL more than LTL. None of these are secrets; they are reasons a screenshot from last quarter is not a bid.
