Freight Broker Company Criteria for Serious Shippers

How to evaluate a freight broker company when you are the shipper: authority, lanes, language, and what they refuse to pretend to be.

A freight broker company is not a personality on LinkedIn. It is an entity with MC authority, a bond, a process agent, and a habit of either telling the truth about modes or not. Shippers who skip that check learn it when a load is stranded and the “company” is a prepaid phone.

COL Freight Solutions LLC is a licensed property broker with offices in Saint Petersburg, Florida and Los Gatos, California. We arrange FTL, LTL, and warehousing in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. We do not market ourselves as an ocean line. That refusal is part of how you should score any freight broker company.

Authority you can look up tonight

Ask for USDOT and MC numbers. Look them up on FMCSA SAFER. Confirm the entity name matches the invoice. COL’s numbers are 4427559 and MC-1741651. A freight broker company that hedges on this point is not busy. It is hiding.

Coverage versus a map graphic

North America coverage means the company can actually tender carriers on both sides of the southern and northern borders, with a bilingual desk if your plants speak Spanish. A shaded map of the continent in a PDF is not coverage.

Ask which lanes they already run, not which lanes they “can theoretically quote.”

People who still pick up the phone

The product after the rate confirmation is exception handling. A freight broker company that only texts after the truck is late is a load board with a logo. COL’s number is 561-880-9808. Use it while the freight is still on the dock, not only after it is missing.

Honesty about adjacent licenses

If they claim to be forwarder, customs broker, airline, and 3PL in the same paragraph without showing those licenses, score them down. A serious freight broker company will introduce the customs broker you need rather than impersonate one.

Commercial structure that rewards consistency

Spot markets matter. So does a program for shippers who tender every week. The Transportation Cost Recovery Program™ is COL’s version of that structure. Ask any freight broker company what they do for recurring volume besides “we will try to keep the rate.”

A short diligence list before the first PO

Insurance certificates of the carriers they use, claims process, after-hours protocol, and whether invoices itemize accessorials. Then send a real lane, not a puzzle. Companies reveal themselves on a live tender.

Questions shippers ask

What makes COL a freight broker company and not a carrier?

We arrange transportation with motor carriers. We do not hold ourselves out as the trucking company that owns the tractor on your load. That is the legal distinction of a property broker.

Should a freight broker company have warehouses?

Some coordinate warehousing; some do not. COL can arrange storage and distribution support. That does not automatically make the firm a full 3PL unless you contract that scope.

Is a bigger freight broker company always safer?

Size is not a substitute for authority, a reachable desk, and honest mode claims. A large firm that hides accessorials is still a bad hire.

Can a Mexican shipper hire a U.S. freight broker company?

Yes, for highway arrangement into, out of, or across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, subject to the carriers and documents the lane requires. COL works those files in Spanish.
