Customs Broker vs Freight Broker: Entry Versus the Truck
Two different licenses. One talks to CBP or SAT. The other dispatches a trailer. Cross-border freight needs both names on the whiteboard.
Updated 2026-08-20 · customs broker vs freight broker
Customs broker vs freight broker is the comparison that saves more border dwell than any tracking app. A customs broker (agente aduanal in Mexico, licensed customs broker in the United States) files the entry, classifies the goods, and speaks to the agency. A freight broker arranges the truck that arrives at the plaza with a real appointment and a legal driver.
COL Freight Solutions is the freight broker. We will not file your 7501 or your pedimento. We will ask for the customs broker’s name before we dispatch a live load toward a crossing that is not cleared.
What the customs broker is paid to do
Classification, valuation support, bond questions, PGA flags (FDA, USDA, and others), and the actual transmission of the entry. They own the conversation with the agency. They do not magically produce a 53-foot van in Laredo at 2 p.m.
What the freight broker is paid to do
Equipment, carrier, dispatch, and the highway exceptions. COL owns that conversation with the motor carrier. We do not own HTS codes. If a vendor offers both, demand two licenses and two invoices, or you will not know which failure delayed the crossing.
Documents that people mix up
A bill of lading is not an entry. A commercial invoice is not a rate confirmation. A packing list is not a FAST card. Customs broker vs freight broker arguments start when one PDF is treated as all four.
- Entry packet: invoice, packing list, bond, power of attorney with the customs broker.
- Truck packet: rate confirmation, carrier BOL, appointment numbers.
- Keep them in two folders even when they travel in the same email.
Mexico adds a patent, not a nickname
An agente aduanal holds a Mexican patent. A U.S. freight broker’s MC number does not substitute for it. Northbound and southbound files need the correct patent on the correct side. COL’s Spanish desk coordinates the truck around that filing. It does not replace it.
Canada is not a third version of the same license
Canadian customs brokerage is again a separate profession. Freight shipping to Canada still needs that filing plus a trucker who can complete the crossing. Hire both.
How COL wants the three-party file to look
You, your customs broker, and COL on the same email thread with ETA and facility hours. Phone 561-880-9808. Offices in Saint Petersburg, FL and Los Gatos, CA. If a forwarder is on ocean, they can stay on that thread without becoming the customs filer either.
